John M. Cannon was born 24 September 1865 in St. George, Washington County, Utah. He was the son of Angus M. Cannon and Sarah M. Mousley. After grammar school, John worked as a carpenter and farmer while studying for about two years at the University of Utah. William Bowker Preston, 1830-1908, fourth presiding bishop of the Mormon Church, was born in Virginia. In 1852, Preston joined the California gold rush. He settled in Yolo County, California where he met and married Harriet Thatcher in 1858. In 1859 he joined the Hezikiah Thatcher family in settling Cache Valley--located on the Utah-Idaho border.
